Upon viewing my inlaid burnishing clay tablets, viewers often ask how they are made. Because they involve many steps, I've gathered images that try to demystify their somewhat mystifying inlaid surfaces. This process is a hybrid of drawing, relief printmaking and ceramic media, alternating between additive and reductive stages. Though the resultant works are one-of-a-kind, I don't feel I would have developed this process without having a printmaking background. I also sometimes take rubbings along the way, so these pieces alternate between being matrices and being artworks in and of themselves, a fluidity that excites me and characterizes other bodies of my work.
