> Long Overdue Book Renewal

"Long Overdue Book Renewal" was a collaboration between Maine College of Art, the Portland Public Library, and artists in and beyond the local community. Then Branch Manager, Michael Whittaker, initiated a distribution of books [otherwise destined for the landfill] to artists interested in creating artworks they would then donate to the library, which would make them available for checkout with a local library card or through interlibrary loan. During the Spring of 2005, students enrolled in my printmaking elective at Maine College of Art called "Alternative Delivery Systems" collaboratively oversaw the promotion of the project and undertook many other aspects of project coordination. Each student also created a work for the exhibition of works that were later cataloged and made available for loan. Between one and two thousand books were distributed to over 200 artists; 186 completed artworks were donated back to the library by 177 artists. 171 of these were made available for checkout in the Spring of 2006, while 15 were placed in the reference collection either due to fragility or issues of user/viewer safety. Many have been checked out and returned by patrons, some of them have traveled around the globe to be included in exhibitions that have spawned similar projects.
