There are piles of books everywhere: for the radio show, the books I’m referencing for the Natural Healing book I’m writing, the things people send me to review, the gardening books to reignite my connection to the earth and plan for our beautiful property, and many, many books that belong to Caidin. The landscape is ever changing, as books get moved from one place to another and yet another. Some are relegated to the outbuilding which one day will be my office, and are summoned to the house when I need them, many sit in a basket waiting for me to review them, and each week one, written by my upcoming radio show guest, makes it to my work space so I can map out an interview for the show. For me there has long been something magical about books. I love to hold them, touch them; even just seeing them is moving for me.
Thinking back to meaningful books, I have two: Michael Tierra’s The Way of Herbs which jumped off a bookstore bookshelf at me and I purchased in the early 90s and The Celestine Prophecy by James Twyman which was recommended by a friend in 1994. The Way of Herbs was like having a direct link to magic, self-empowerment and Mother Nature. The Celestine Prophecy validated that everything I thought to be true, was. And both books anchor what has become a thrilling journey of discovering me and helping others along the way.
Spiritual books no longer grace my bookshelves, unless for sentimental reasons, having come to a place where I fully gather my own insight and now share that with others. Herbal books seem to always have a place because I love being surrounded by their wisdom whether it’s in a book or in my herbal pantry.
At one point in my life I used to hold books hostage on my bookshelves using them to validate who I was; books of poetry, books of philosophy, art books; but when I finally realized that I kept them there, not because I loved them, but because they demonstrated to others my own perceived depth, I gave them all away. I now keep books that have meaning to me; the aforementioned, a Winnie the Pooh book, a book of Elizabeth Browning’s Poems, Rumi, B.K.S. Iyengar’s Light On Yoga because I hope to be able to find my way through all the asanas one day.
Everything else on the shelves, the floors, the tables, the desks serves some sort of present time purpose. But basically, I love books and thank all the people who take the time to put their thoughts and passions onto paper.
